I can't pinpoint with any accuracy where my interest in using natural materials came from but it likely stems from a combination of an innate affinity for nature and a genetic heritability from my Italian ancestry. In a world dominated by synthetic, mass-produced items, natural materials have a soul — they age beautifully, developing a unique patina and character over time.
My journey in construction began in 2006 with a simple belief: homes should enhance, not harm, the health of their occupants and the environment. Starting as a traditional builder, I became quickly frustrated with conventional practices and attitudes. The indiscriminate use and impact of toxic materials that are harmful for both home occupants and the environment. The early experience sparked a lifelong commitment to finding better ways to build.
Today, with over 20 years of real life experience and more than 100 completed projects, Joe is one of Australia's leading practitioners in hempcrete construction and sustainable building techniques.
