The Concept
A 50sqm modular house created from four prefabricated hempcrete modules. Start with the essentials and expand over time, adding modules as your needs change.
Designed by Joe D'Alo with architect Michael Thorpe (ARBV), this concept is grounded in real construction experience. Joe has successfully built a single hempcrete modular unit, proving the method and performance. The four-module configuration shown here is the next evolution of that work, currently in development.
Specifications
At the heart of the home sits a timber-clad cube containing the kitchen joinery, storage, and an integrated bathroom with skylight. Everything you need, beautifully organised.
The surrounding space features "rolled corners" that open outward to the landscape, creating flexible living areas flooded with natural light and cross ventilation.
Materials
Carbon-negative walls that absorb CO2, store carbon for the life of the building, and provide extraordinary thermal performance.
Locally sourced Victorian Ash for structural elements and interior finishes, chosen for its warmth and sustainability.
Exterior timber battens finished in Black Japan for a refined, contemporary aesthetic that weathers beautifully.
Lime-based external render that breathes with the building, protecting the hempcrete while allowing moisture to escape.
